Henry Hon at 70

From Doug and Debbie Krieger – to Henry and others listening in . . .

Wow, Happy Birthday, Henry—your 70th!

“70” as you well know is an exceedingly significant number in God’s pattern of numbers. Psalm 90:10 states:

“The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labor and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away.”

Now, you’re at your threescore (3 X 20 = 60) + 10 years = 70 years; and “if by reason of strength they be fourscore years or 80 years,” etc. – now what happens when a guy reaches 81—by this time I should be flying away—but maybe I’m one of those two spies (Joshua and Caleb) that made it into the Good Land—ha!

Anyway, I’d like to say that when I was 28 I first met Henry Hon in San Francisco—I was his “elder” in the Church in San Francisco where he first met the Lord Jesus! So, that was 53 years ago! We both sought after Christ as Savior and Lord and desired real oneness with all His people . . . but that’s not that easy.

Henry and I parted waves back in 1974 just because events overtook both of us. Then about six years ago the Lord brought us back together. Henry’s vision of the practical oneness of the Body of Christ, as my own, had deepened with age and experience—His Word truly opened to us. That’s when we started to experience that Ekklesia was not just a noun, it was a verb. Differences were welcomed among God’s children and “meeting and greeting” as well as “each one has” and “one by one” where all the members assembled to share their real experiences of Christ in their daily lives without anyone dominating or trying to control others in our gatherings.

Yes, we’ve gone through some deep waters in this new journey we’re on—but His love and Life have made all the difference. Henry is a person of fellowship and genuine relationship in Christ! I’ve seen in Henry a real humility and desire to “not to think of yourselves more highly than you ought to think” – because we’re all members one of another (Rom. 12).

Henry, your vision of Ekklesia is so real and refreshing—empowered by God’s Spirit. He’s given you those interior qualities of His Life and Presence and the external resources to fulfill that vision . . . taking it around the world, especially in Nigeria. Henry has seen in our brothers and sisters in Nigeria a genuine approval of the Lord and an openness to receive from the Lord, the Spirit, the Truth, the Life, and Glory to bring us all into One! I have been so greatly blessed by knowing and meeting with so many of the brethren in Nigeria and elsewhere around the world. Henry’s genuine openness to all members of the Body of Christ is infectious! Others begin to emulate his actions because his only agenda is to see the ”scattered children of God” to come together and to “make them one” – that’s why Christ came to die not only for the Jewish Nation but for us all! (John 11:51-52).

So, Henry, Deb and I wish you a joyous 70th and may you, by His mercy and grace, persist in running the race—overcoming by His Life and witnessing His glory manifested among the saints. I’m convinced that Christ in you will endure to the end and that His Eternal Purpose is all-consuming in your heart. Be blessed, dear brother.
